01 The idea

A room that sings back

Room 4 is about how everything is connected. So everything in it talks to the sound.

Ride the slide, and a bird sings in the climate corner. Spin the house, a bird in the housing corner. Then the birds fly across the room to the cloud in the middle. Three thunderclaps in a row, and the greenhouse answers.

Under it all, a soft drone slowly circles the room.

02 How it works

Six corners

  • Mobility and skills: the tandem bike, the high five wall, ACE.
  • Social: the social sustainability corner.
  • The flowers: the yes button and its hymn.
  • The cloud: thunder, and where the birds fly to.
  • Housing: Spin the house.
  • Climate: the slide and the scrap monster.

03 Under the hood

A sample player in Python

  • A Python sample player listens to every installation in the room over MQTT, with rules for each: every time, at most every few seconds, or once per session.
  • 87 birds, 53 hymn notes, 13 thunderclaps and a bed of running water.
  • Six mono channels across two sound cards, run as two separate streams. More robust, open every day.
  • The same bird can’t sing twice in three seconds. The drone pad circles the room on slow LFOs, 16 to 50 seconds a lap.
  • The curator turns the whole room up or down from one knob.

Got something big to say? Let’s make it a place.
